Fernet Showdown

Fernet Showdown

What started as a video on a fernet and coke quickly spiraled out of control. I now possess 9 bottles of fernet, so it's time for a showdown. Which is the best straight up, and which is the best in the classic Argentinian highball fernet and coke?

Fernets

  1. Fernet Branca (Italy) $30 - 39% ABV - menthol forward, very bitter

  2. Contratto (Italy) $35 - 30% ABV - menthol on the front, sweeter smoother finish, feel it in the nose

  3. Luxardo (Italy) $25 - 40% ABV - chocolate up front, menthol finish

  4. Fernet Francisco (California) $40 - 40% ABV - menthol on nose, pretty bitter

  5. Fernet Del Frate Angelico (California) $70 - 44% ABV - warm and sweet on front, intensely bitter on back

  6. Fred Jerbis (East Italy) $40 - 34% ABV - less bitter, but complex. Sweet on front, just right amount of bitter on back, more citrus notes, orange

  7. R. Jelinek (Czech Republic) $20 - 38% ABV - very sweet, vanilla notes, little bitter finish, is this even fernet?

  8. Leopold (Colorado) $35 - 40% ABV - really sweet on front, menthol back, tastes like weed

  9. Branca Menta (Italy) $30 - 30% ABV - very sweet, light peppermint flavor, very drinkable
